.. Walker defends his actions (01/02/04)

Leicester goalie Ian Walker has released a statement defending his actions yesterday when he was involved in a bust up with a Leicester fan on the pitch.

20 mins into the 2nd half a Leicester fan strolled onto the pitch and went over to have a little chat with Ian about how rubbish City were doing. After some pushing and verbals Walker got him on the floor. Here's what Walker says;

"I was stood in the penalty box when I became aware of a fan coming towards me on the pitch,"

"He came up to me and was abusive.

"I tried to push him away and attempted to restrain him whilst stewards came on to the pitch.

"It goes without saying that everyone connected with the club is bitterly disappointed by this afternoon's result.

"Our supporters have every right to make their feelings known about our performance and I can understand their frustration but I don't think acting in this way is going to help the team.

"What is important now is that we all stick together and concentrate on re-grouping for our trip to Newcastle United next weekend.''

No doubt the fA will have a look at it and penalise Leicester for poor stewarding and for the fans throwing things on the pitch too. The club are already investigating how the guy was allowed to just saunter on.

"The club and police will be conducting a full review of the incident. No further action will be taken before next week," said a club statement.

The Police also released a statement about the fan which read;

'He was removed by stewards and has now been arrested for pitch
encroachment. He remains in police custody.

'The club and police will be conducting a full review of the incident. It is not anticipated that there will be any further comment from the club or the police until lunchtime on Monday.'

Micky is backing Walks, saying

"It was a wet pitch. Ian was wearing studs and the fan wasn't and he wentdown a bit too easily for my liking."

Big Ron on the Premiership also backed Walker saying "He should have decked him."

Unconfirmed reports say that the guy was Andrew Price, better known as Wombat, from Husbands Bosworth, who's normally a bit of a character.
