..Fanzine editor banned for life (10/02/03)

Seeing as our lot have jollied off to the sun we thought we'd see what was happening elsewhere in the football world...and it's all kicked off in Darlington.

The Chairman there, Mr George Reynolds, has banned a 16 year old kid, Dave McLean, for life, for daring to slag him and the club off in the fanzine WTMG.

The argument has deterioated into a great childish public slanging match but opens a real debate about the powers of Chairman and freedom of speech for fans.

The Chairman accuses the 16 year old of not paying for his season ticket (he won it in a competition), of not going to games (he has a Saturday job to pay for college) and that "Hitler would have been proud of him" which seems a tad over the top to say the least! He says that Dave has been " banned for life for inciting a small number of fans and unfair and biased remarks against our club."

He adds in his statement that "He has been trouble since the day he took over the fanzine. Remarks in the fanzine do nothing but take the **** out of our club."

That's what fanzines do, you great dope! Thank god we've got a club that has actually sold our Fox fanzine in the club shop!

As there is more and more momentum in the game for fans to get more involved and get a say in their club, Mr Reynolds seems to be missing the mood and may well have one hell of a backlash with national e-mail campaigns already running to get Dave his season ticket back, and plans for protests at games.

Check out www.darlofc.co.uk for both sides of the argument and their message board for how everyone is rallying round Dave!

Should a Chairman have the power to ban a supporter for daring to criticise? Maybe you think Mr Reynolds is right...

Don't know about WTMG...where's their sense of humour gone? Apparently Dave may be ok as Toys R us in Teeside Park are selling fake wigs and matching bushy beards for £6.99 (for the pair).

FFS is all for free speech, but would just like to say we love our Chairman very very much and we're very sorry we keep slagging Not Very Tricky Trev and Podgers off and we'd quite like to keep our season ticket thank you.
