A quick
shimmy off at the Luton turn and a scenic trip through Harpenden
and St Albans saw us coming into London on the A10 for a change.
Then we hit the traffic round the ground. It was like Wembley. Tens
of 1,000's of fans milling around and blocking all the streets.
Fancy dress and inflatable Premiership trophies were everywhere
and they greeted us with smiles and waves.
We
abandoned the coach and walked to the ground. There were parties
going on in people's houses and gardens and a great atmosphere.
We'd never seen so many people at Highbury but apparently thousands
without tickets had come out to party and to watch the game in local
pubs. The touts were charging £400 for tickets and doing good
trade.
So,
back to the game. 11-1 for Leicester to win and the punters were
shovelling money on in their droves. Worth a quid or two at that
price, eh? Football's a funny old game and you never know with Leicester.
Nothing to play for and already down, and they always raise their
game against the big boys. Could they stop Arsenal's unbeaten run,
despite injuries galore, and make a lot of people in Leicester financially
better off?
The
atmosphere inside Highbury was great for a change. Library? No way.
The Arsenal fans were on form, waving their flags and enjoying the
day. They started brightly and put us under a bit of pressure for
the first 10 minutes. Walker had to tip a Henry free kick over the
bar.
But
then City got more into the game and stifled the midfield. Nalis
got stuck in a bit more than normal and looks like he's getting
to know the English game more. Bent did a lot of work out on the
right, getting some balls into Dickov who was buzzing around back
to his old self.
The
few attempts Arsenal had went wide and a guy near us took great
delight in shouting "Henry, you're sh*t" every time the
Frenchman didn't do anything with the ball.
After
25 minutes Mad Frank got the ball and went on a bit of a run. He
managed to get past Viera and floated a great cross in to Dickov
on the far post who headed the ball over Lehman. The City fans watched
the ball go into the net and started leaping up and down scarcely
believing it and looking at Durkin to see if it really was a goal.
That
shut the Arsenal fans up. They seemed very nervous all of a sudden
as their unbeaten run looked shaky!
City
played with confidence, defended well and even started passing the
ball around, to chants of 'ole' from us all.
The
first half has whizzed by and we were soon into the second half.
The guy next to us decided to turn his attention to Lehman now he
was up our end who was treated to "Freak!" whenever he
got the ball. Although Henry was stil "sh*t" pretty often
too.
A few
minutes in Bergkamp put a ball into the area which Cole brought
down to control. Mad Frank was on him. Literally. They got all tangled
up together and ended in a heap on the ground. It was more clumsy
than intended but Mad Frank couldn't complain too much as Mr Durkin,
in his last Prem game before retiring, had no option but to point
to the spot.
Thierry
took a perfect penalty to make it 1-1. "You're sh*t, Henry"
yelled the guy infront.
Arsenal
put on a bit more pressure, but city counter attacked and City fans
were up in arms when a clear Gilberto handball was waved away by
Durkin. Surely one of the clearest claims for a pen ever?
Arsenal
finally opened up our good defending after 66 minutes with Bergkamp
putting Viera through. Viera put the ball past Walker and then slid
it into the net
Adams
put Coyne on for Walker, fuelling rumours that Walker may be off,
and the Welshman made two great saves.
Arsenal
put on Martin Keown for his last game as a Gooner to rapturous applause,
and so he would qualify for a Premiership medal.
The
came a very scary sight. Benjamin came on to replace Dickov, who
got a standing ovation from the whole crowd, and then Trev took
the captains armband. It's just not right!
The
final whistle saw Frank Sinclair and Steffen Freund coming over
to throw their City shirts into the Leicester crowd, and everyone
tipped up on the seats they were standing on and fell in a heap
trying to catch them.
We
were allowed to stay behind and watch the presentation of the trophy,
and most of the Leicester fans did, giving Arsenal a well deserved
ovation as they brought the trophy round. Wenger and Henry clapped
us back and stuck up their thumbs. It was a nice big love in.
As
we made our way back to the coaches Arsenal fans were coming and
shaking us by the hands and telling us we'd come back up. A fantastic
day out.
