So
Peter Taylor lives to fight another day? After the last
gasp equaliser against Ipswich on Saturday it now looks
like Peter Taylor will get at least another game out of
City. Unfortunately, that game is against Blackpool in the
Worthington Cup and this time, failure would almost certainly
mean the end.
Make
no mistake about it, if there is a repeat of last years
"hiccup" against Crystal Palace tonight at Blackpool
then Taylor is almost certainly finished.
In
recent years City have won the Worthington Cup (formally
the Coca-Cola Cup) twice having been to the finals three
times. So last years defeat to Crystal Palace, at home no
less, was a bitter pill to swallow and in hind sight it
was a sign of things to come.
It's
ironic now then that Peter Taylor seems to have come full
circle. If the result against Crystal Palace started the
slide at City then the game against Blackpool could end
it, one way or the other.
City's
performance on Saturday against Ipswich, while an improvement
over the last two matches, was still nowhere near the standard
needed to survive in the Premiership. Ade Akinbiyi again
proved why he's worth nowhere near 5 million. James Scowcroft
did nothing to suggest to me that he was worth the effort
Taylor put in to sign him and the midfield still looks lost
in places. All in all it seemed more like a case of plenty
of effort but little in the way of skill.
Although
there was little of the "Taylor out" chants that
have flowed the City boss over recent weeks last weekend,
Peter knows that his time is running out and the only thing
that will save him is wins and goals. That is why tonight
is so very important to the whole side.
If
City can go to Blackpool and score some serious goals then
Taylor may get another game. But even a draw against the
2nd division outfit would not appease the many loyal fans
who are expected to make the journey to be beside the seaside.
But
enough about City, what about Blackpool? Well we already
know that they are in Division two. They are currently 18th
in the league, 4 places above relegation, having just lost
2-1 to Oldham Athletic. The loss almost mirrored City's
game against Ipswich as they too had a man sent off and
missed a penalty. Their record so far this season is W2
D1 L3.
Probably
the most interesting piece of new about Blackpool is that
former fox Graham Fenton has recently signed for them, although
it doesn't look like he is playing at the minute.
City
look like they will probably run out against Blackpool with
the same team that got the draw against Ipswich. Blackpool
also look relatively injury free.
