Leicester came into this game on the back of a good performance against
Fulham - but were expecting a tough match, as Colchester had won an
incredible 11 games in a row at home.
The Leicester team was unchanged, and started the game the same way they'd played against Fulham, with some good passing football leading to chances. The pressure was rewarded in the 19th minute when Iain Hume finished well after being put through by Matty Fryatt. Leicester's dominance should probably have resulted in more goals, but poor finishing and the linesman's flag meant the teams went in at half time with the scores at 1-0. Referee Danny McDermid was in charge of his first game at this level, and although he'd had a poor first half it didn't prepare us for what was to come in the second. Three minutes into the half he awarded a penalty for an alleged push by Paddy McCarthy - something only the ref seems to have seen. The penalty seemed to knock Leicester out of their stride, and they weren't able to repeat their first half performance. They still looked the more likely team to score a winner though, with Matty Fryatt missing the best chance. Fryatt has played his best football of the season in the last two matches but still seems to be lacking in confidence in front of goal. Danny Cadamarteri replaced Fryatt with six minutes left, but he was unable to repeat last week's heroics. The match will probably be remembered most by Mr McDermid's antics though, in particular just before the end when he showed a Colchester player a yellow card, then a red, indicating it was his second yellow of the game. After some confusion the referee realised the player hadn't been booked previously, and he was allowed to continue.
Before the match a draw may have been considered a good result, considering Colchester's home form and league position, but it was a match we could, and should, have got all three points from.
